ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 Software Testing Standards

With the publication of four new international standards (and with several more in development), software testing is moving into a new era of professionalism.

This workshop initially explains why and how the standards were developed before providing attendees with an overview of what they cover including:

• organizational test processes;
• management test processes;
• dynamic test processes;
• test design techniques; and
• test documentation templates

The class will then provide attendees with a step-by-step guide to how the standards would be applied in a typical project using the risk‑based approach required by these standards.   Finally, the class will consider how the standards can be tailored for projects using different life cycle approaches (e.g. V, waterfall, agile) and different levels of criticality.

Attendees will be provided with a class hand‑out that includes coverage of all the test processes and example test documentation templates.

This class is aimed at test professionals who want to ensure they are fully aware of best industry practice as reflected in the ISO 29119 standards.  This includes people in roles such as test managers, test leads, test analysts, test engineers, and test consultants.  A working knowledge of software testing is assumed.

At the end of the class, participants will:

• understand the importance and scope of the ISO 29119 standards and their applicability in all organizations, and using any lifecycle model;
• have practical experience in the most critical aspects of creating a test plan for a realistic project that complies with the latest international testing standards;
• have hands-on practice in the design of test cases compliant with the ISO 29119 standards; and
• appreciate how the ISO 29119 standards can be adopted for use in projects at all levels of criticality as they are based on following a risk-based approach.
