I have been directly involved in the following areas of professional development for software testers and university academics:
BCS SIGiST
I was Chair of the BCS Specialist Group in Software Testing (SIGiST) from 2004 until 2019, and involved since 1989. This group provided not-for-profit conferences four times a year with internationally-renowned speakers (see http://www.bcs.org/category/9262).
There is also an excellent prize-winning magazine produced by the SIGiST, called ‘The Tester’. See here to download both the latest copy – and from an archive of previous publications going back to 2002. There are also SIGiST Newsletters available from as far back as 1996.
ISTQB – Test Certification
From 1997 to 2003 I was Chair of the BCS ISEB Software Testing Certificate Board (now part of BCS Professional Certifications), responsible for developing professional qualifications for software testers.
In 2001 I founded the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (see www.istqb.org) to promote software testing qualifications on a global scale. We started with just 6 national boards – and there are now 63 member boards covering most of the world.
The first ISEB qualification was made available in 1998 and in ISTQB there are now more than 17 different qualifications with over 673,000 successful candidates.
Teaching Software Engineering
In the mid-1990s I founded the BCS Specialist Group in the Teaching of Software Engineering. This was largely of interest to university lecturers sharing best practices. Unhappily this group no longer exists.
